Virgin Island Scuba Diving:
An Introduction
Scuba diving is a sport that requires training. You can't just go get a tank and other equipment and start diving. You need to take a course and receive certification from one of the inernationally recognized training programs.
The biggest organization is PADI, the Professional Association of Diving Instructors. Other recognized programs are run by NAUI (the National Association of Underwater instructors), and SSI (Scuba Schools International). The YMCA also offers scuba certification courses.
Courses are widely available in the Virgin Islands. You can complete these programs in as little as three to four days of training, or over a longer period of time, if you prefer. The cost for certification is around $400 and up. Of course, you can also get your certification at home, before you visit the islands.
If all of this seems like too much trouble and expense, don't despair. There's a quicker, easier way. Read On.
Many of the Virgin Islands scuba programs offer an abbreviated course (sometimes called a resort course or an introductory course). In this scenario, you get a few hours of introductory training in a swimming pool, and then have the chance to actually experience a real scuba dive on a sheltered section of reef, under the watchful eyes of expert instructors.
The price of this kind of program is quite reasonable, typically around $90 to $120. In my opinion, this is a great way for you to experience Virgin Island scuba diving if you don't have the desire to go through a full certification program.
